Part 2: nutrition considerations in gender affirming care with tom scully & max jones

Sat May 27th, 2023 10-11:am AEST

Standard nutrition and dietetic practice is based upon the cisnormative assumption that everyone we work with is either a man or a woman and identifies with the sex they were assigned at birth. This can leave dietitians and nutritionists feeling unprepared when encountering anyone who falls outside this strict binary. It also increases the risk of unintentionally causing harm. This workshop will empower clinicians to feel more confident working with trans and gender diverse people by helping them to:

  • identify common nutrition related issues experienced by trans and gender diverse communities

  • understand how cisnormativity shows up in standard nutrition and dietetic practice

  • adapt nutrition recommendations and interventions to meet the needs of trans and gender diverse people.

Part 3 - medical considerations in gender affirming care with dr portia predny

Sat June 3rd, 2023 10-11:30am AEST

This presentation will provide you with a comprehensive overview of the medical care of trans and gender diverse people, inclusive of medical and surgical treatments, psychological supports, and other allied health services that can be of benefit in a person’s gender transition journey. There will be discussion of the important effects and potential side effects of medical gender affirming treatments, nutritional considerations relating to treatments, and the intersections of medical conditions, gender dysphoria, and eating disorders.

At the completion of this session you will be able to: -

  • understand the role of hormonal and other medical therapies in gender affirming care

  • identify the effects, potential side effects and risks of medical and surgical therapies

  • support clients that may need specific nutritional interventions or monitoring due to their medical/hormonal therapies

  • recognise some of the intersections of gender dysphoria and minority stress, with body dysmorphia and eating disorders

  • recognise and undertake the important role of advocacy as part of your gender diverse clients’ support network as they navigate the medical system.
