Focussing more on the “how” and “why” rather than just the “what,” you will be provided with key learnings and opportunities to develop your skills within a supportive and reflective learning environment. At the end of the workshop, you can expect to leave feeling clear about a range of ways to navigate the inevitable challenges and complexities of working in this field, coupled with an ongoing curiosity to learn more from your valued colleagues and clients!

Who is this workshop suitable for?

This series is primarily designed for Dietitians with more than two years of dietetic practice. If you are a Dietitian with less than two years of dietetic practice, you are very welcome to attend on the premise that you have completed all reading and allocated work prior to the workshop.

You may have been seeing clients with clinical eating disorders for some time, and you are more than welcome too! This workshop is designed as a comprehensive and practical dive into dietetic care and may act as a very suitable review or update of existing skills and understandings.

There are more commonalities than differences with Eating Disorder care worldwide, and we have designed this course to be suitable for, and thoughtful about the needs of, as many Dietitians as possible wherever you are in the world. Please do reach out if you have any questions, and see other course options below to get a good idea of whether this will be suitable for you.

You can expect to leave with a thorough understanding of:

  • The role of the Dietitian in ED care, including scope of practice

  • Inclusive, thoughtful Dietetic screening and assessment

  • Evidence based practice AND practice-based evidence

  • Optimising inclusivity in Eating Disorder spaces - your role

  • “Where do I start?” - setting up your Dietetic care with a solid foundation

  • Communication skills, working & collaborating with a health team

  • Trauma-informed care

  • Specific counselling skills that are essential in ED work

  • Aligning your practice with stages of change

  • Pacing & flow of sessions over time, setting expectations and boundaries

  • Medical monitoring & tracking of client progress

  • Working with adolescents, families, adults

  • “What do I say when….” troubleshooting

  • Cases to bring presentations to life, and offers more realistic opportunities to learn.

  • How, when & why to bring topics such as body image and weight stigma into the conversation

  • Understanding our own stuck-points and what gets in the way for us doing this work

  • Supervision and ongoing support for Dietitians

Please note that we will not be a training specifically in any particular therapeutic/counselling or treatment modality (eg. ACT, DBT or eg. FBT or CBT-E) but will cover these topics in broad form with the intention of inviting and encouraging you to pursue further training in specific ways of working with clients, groups and communities.

About your facilitators:

Fiona Sutherland (The Mindful Dietitian) & Shane Jeffrey (River Oak Health), are both Australian APD’s (Accredited Practising Dietitians) and have over 20 years of Eating Disorder specific experience each, working across practice settings including clinical, community, private practice & education. They are both currently members of the Australian New Zealand Academy of Eating Disorders (ANZAED), with Shane as Treasurer and Fiona as a general member and Co-Convenor of the Nutrition Special Interest Group (SIG). They are both highly experienced educators and workshop facilitators, co-presenting this workshop live in Australia as a 2-day workshop early in 2020 in several locations prior to COVID.

How will the live online course work?

We hope that you are able to join us for all, or at least most of the live sessions. We understand that it’s not always possible to attend live, and we ask that where it is possible that these hours are prioritised to optimise your learning experience.

All sessions with be recorded (with your consent) and uploaded into the course platform “Teachable” so you can keep the content forever. All resources, handouts, worksheets, research, reflection activities etc will also be uploaded to this site.

Your other training options:

We encourage you to seek training that feels like a good match to you and your individual circumstances and have some suggestions which we highly recommend.

If you’re looking for take-it-at-your-own-pace online training, I recommend Marci Evans Nutrition Counselling for Eating Disorders course - all Marci’s courses are fantastic!!

Another online option here is Jessica Setnicks Eating Disorders Bootcamp, a highly regarded workshop (now online only temporarily we hope!) from someone very experienced.

Our Commitment to an as-Inclusive-as-possible experience

We acknowledge that absolute inclusivity in this training will not be possible but as white, highly privileged Australians working within a complex system, we are working to bring you training that demonstrates thoughtfulness and efforts to make space for as many experiences and people as possible. We are committed to a high-consent process at all steps, and invite your feedback at any time if we can improve these processes.

We are doing this in two ways which, combined, we hope provides a greater opportunity for Dietitians to participate in training which is accessible, and reflects deep respect and care:

  1. Thoughtfully reflecting on course content to reflect on any material that may feel unsafe, disrespectful or repeat past experiences where power has been enacted in harmful ways.

  2. Offering an equity pricing model for participants which acknowledges people’s varied capacities and lived experiences (see below for more details, contact Fiona directly to enquire about Equity pricing).

Equity Pricing:

Accessible pricing is important to us, as a reflection of our genuine commitment to equity in training and education for Dietitians.
